In July 2001, the Virginia Living Museum Newport News opened the first exhibit of its recent $22.6 million expansion, the 5,500 square-foot Coastal Plain Aviary. This unique aviary houses more than 16 species of birds that either breed in Virginia or fly through the state during spring and fall migration along the coastal flyway. Some of the birds you might view inside the aviary include pelicans, cormorants, egrets, herons, ibis and ducks. Many visitors to this Virginia Museum are interested to know that all of the birds in the aviary have suffered some type of injury or have been imprinted on humans and cannot be released in the wild.
