Chehalis

Chehalis Washington is the county seat of Lewis County and can be found approximately 25 miles south of Olympia along Interstate 5. This puts the city of about 7,200 residents almost exactly halfway between Seattle and Portland. Among the main interests for Chehalis visitors are the city’s historic downtown, its collection of quality museums, and its well-established city parks. There’s also the views from the hills to the west of town. Weather permitting, various vantage points in these hills afford glimpses of Mount Rainer, Mount Adams, and Mount St. Helens off in the distance.

Winding through the valley in which Chahalis Washington resides is the Chehalis River. A great way to take in the river scenery is by taking a relaxing ride along the Chehalis-Centralia Railroad. During the summer months, steam trains run regular routes along the Chehalis River, passing small farms and wooded areas. For those who are interested in Chehalis train transportation, the Chehalis-Centralia Railroad also offers dinner trains and special seasonal trains. Examples of the seasonal trains include the Easter trains and the world famous Polar Express trains in the winter. As a side note, Amtrak trains also operate out of Chehalis. A fun side trip idea involves taking an Amtrak train from Chehalis to nearby Centralia. Among other things, the city of Centralia offers a historic library, factory outlet stores, and the legendary Olympic Club Hotel & Theater.

Washington State’s Lewis County offers a diverse array of recreational opportunities, especially when you consider that portions of Mt. Rainier National Park and the Goat Rocks Wilderness Area can be found in the eastern part of the county. Even closer to Chehalis are Rainbow Falls State Park, Lewis & Clark State Park, and a portion of the extensive Mt. Baker Snoqualmie National Forest.

Thanks to all the various regional attractions and the location of Chehalis along Interstate 5, the Chehalis hotels can come in handy for travelers who are exploring the area. Among the city’s top lodging choices are the Best Western PLUS Park Place Inn & Suites and the Holiday Inn Express & Suites Chehalis-Centralia. If cheap Chehalis lodging is what you prefer, there are some good options, including the Relax Inn and the Chehalis Inn (pictured). You can also consider going camping. Among the options in this department are the RV and tent sites at Stan Hedwall Park in Chehalis proper.
