National Geographic named Magens Bay one of the ten most beautiful beaches in the world. For a $1 admission fee you can be there, sifting the fine white sand between your toes, resting under the shade of coconut palms, and gazing upon the steep green hills that flank the dazzling blue harbor. The beach was deeded to the island as part of a 52-acre parcel of land donated by a local wealthy family. Stipulations in the deed forbid construction directly on the beach, and even go so far as to designate the color of the lifeguard stands. As a result, it is one of the only Caribbean beaches on the island without a resort in view.

Emerald Beach is nestled in a small cove on the south coast of St. Thomas. The namesake Emerald Beach Resort (www.st-thomas.com/emeraldbeach) takes full advantage of the view, with a pool, beachfront restaurant and bar, and rooms facing the ocean. The resort is conveniently located near the airport, and not far from Charlotte-Amalie. Windsurfing, kayaking, snorkeling, and diving gear is rented at the beach, and SCUBA lessons are available through Admiralty Dive Center.

Sapphire Beach offers good snorkeling on the east side, and a great view of St. John. A small spit with a coral and rock-lined walkway juts out into the water.
