Buenos Aires Museums

Buenos Aires museums are an important aspect of the cultural dynamic and tradition in the capital of Argentina. Many people relate Buenos Aires with tango dancing and partying, but fail to realize what a cultural epicenter it in fact is. The broad selection of museums, theaters, bookstores, and public gathering places has contributed to this city's reputation as the Paris of South America. The best museums in Buenos Aires display the works of visual artists, the history of national figures, cinematography, photography, and much more. From the National Museum of Fine Arts to smaller, niche museums like the Museo Historico Nacional del Cabildo y de la Revolucion de Mayo, which celebrates Argentine independence, there is something that will interest just about everyone.

The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (National Museum of Fine Arts) is located in the upscale neighborhood of Recoleta and is referred to as the MNBA by locals. It was established in 1895 and resided on Calle Florida and in Plaza San Martin before ultimately taking up residence in Recoleta. It is widely considered to be among the best museums in Buenos Aires, as the first floor alone features 24 exhibition halls that contain a plethora of international works dating from Medieval times through the twentieth century. Although international artists are well represented at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, there is a decided emphasis on the works of Argentine artists, as well as a range of artists from all over South America. Some of the artists represented include Antonio Berni, Eduardo Sivori, and Alfredo Guttero. If you are planning a trip to Buenos Aires and enjoy visiting museums, the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes is a must-see.

The Planetario Galileo Galilei is considered by many to be one of the best museums in Buenos Aires as well. It was constructed in 1966 and offers visitors and truly unbelievable laser reproduction of the expanse of space. People of all ages will enjoy a trip to this museum where visitors will be able to learn about astronomy, science, and most importantly, have fun. This is an especially cool destination for children.

One of the other Buenos Aires museums that is great for kids is the aptly named Museo de los Ninos. Kids ages 3 to 12 will have an incredible time, all the while learning about science from a variety of perspectives. Let the kids engage in educational fun as they works with paints, ceramics, water, and much more.

Museo Evita is one of the most frequently visited Buenos Aires museums because of the international appeal and fame of Eva Peron, one of the country’s favorite, if not the favorite, daughter. She inspired the Argentine people through her acting, activism, political will, and fervor for life. When you visit this particular museum, you will have a chance to get an inside glimpse of her life and work and thereby learn much about the political development and history of Argentina itself. Some of the other best museums in Buenos Aires include the Museo de la Casa de Gobierno, Ecocentro, Museo Historico Nacional, and the Museo de Motivos Argentinos.
