Rio de Janeiro Festivals

Rio de Janeiro festivals only help to make this vibrant South American city such an interesting place to visit. When it comes to the best festivals in Rio, Carnival takes top honors. Mostly held over the course of four days, this pre-Lent celebration is what all other carnivals around the world are compared to. Rio de Janeiro events aren't limited to this world-famous celebration, however. The city offers a wide variety of enticing events to choose from, including one of the most prolific audiovisual events in all of Latin America.

After Carnival, the Festival do Rio might just be the king when it comes to the best festivals in Rio. Held over the course of two weeks in late September and early October, this audiovisual extravaganza attracts thousands of film industry enthusiasts on an annual basis. Various cinemas throughout the city are used to screen both Brazilian films and films from abroad, including documentaries and shorts. Seminars are part of the mix, and various film exhibitions only add to the atmosphere.

When it comes to Rio de Janeiro events, few rival the city's New Year's Eve celebrations. Easily one of the biggest events of the year, New Year's in Rio sees the main party taking place on world-famous Copacabana Beach. People fill the beach both day and night, and many wear white clothing according to tradition and offer up a white flower to the sea goddess Iemanja. DJs really get the party started at around 7 p.m., and as you might imagine, an extravagant fireworks display lights up the Rio sky at midnight. Many of the best hotels and resorts along Rio's best beaches host fun-filled balls on New Year's Eve, and as is true on the beach, wearing white to these balls is the norm.

If you're up for something different when trying to find Rio de Janeiro festivals that pique your interest, you might keep the Rio Formula World Festival in mind. This October event features windsurfing pros doing their thing off the Brazilian coast just east of Rio. In terms of Rio de Janeiro events of the spectator sport variety, nothing compares to soccer, or football as the sport is more known throughout the world. In fact, some locals might tell you that football games are the best festivals in Rio. The famed Maracana Stadium is among the world temples of soccer, and it can be found virtually in the heart of Rio. If you manage to get tickets for a game at this renowned venue, you will likely be in for one fantastic show between the crowd and the action on the pitch.

When including one of these Rio de Janeiro events on the travel agenda isn't an option, you will still likely come away from your vacation with memories to last a lifetime. This city by the sea is among the most picturesque in the world, and its people are known for being friendly and full of life. There's never a shortage of options when it comes to things to do in Rio de Janeiro, or Rio de Janeiro festivals, and chances are good that there will be an event or festival of some kind going on regardless of when you visit.
