Galapagos Animals
Galapagos Birds | Galapagos Marine Iguanas | Galapagos Reptiles | Galapagos Sea Lions | Galapagos Tortoises

The Galapagos Island is perhaps most famous for its animal population. The animals of the Galapagos Island are most notable for their proximity. Visitors can literally swim and hike right alongside some of the world's most unique species, as they exist in their natural habitat. Some of the most popular endemic Galapagos animals are close to extinction, and their protection is of high priority. As such, it is best to observe the rules surrounding a visit to the Galapagos Islands to ensure the safety of Galapagos animals for years to come.

Here is information about some of the most famous Galapagos animals:

The Galapagos Tortoise

The Galapagos tortoise is one of the most famous and well-known animals of the Galapagos Islands. This mammoth animal can weigh up to 300 pounds and has a life expectancy of between 100 and 200 years. There are about 14 different sub-species of tortoises inhabiting the islands, and these gentle herbivores are a special site to see among the animals of the Galapagos Islands.

The Waved Albatross

As another of the more famous Galapagos Island animals, the waved albatross is a graceful and powerful bird. These large birds can stay away at sea for months or even years without ever needing to touch land. Feeding off of fish, squid, and crustaceans, these beautiful Galapagos Island animals are best viewed between the months of April and December.

Penguins

The only penguins found in warm waters are found among the Galapagos Island animals throughout the year. These animals of the Galapagos are the most northerly penguins in the world, as all of the rest live on the earth's southern hemisphere.

The Marine Iguanas

Found only among Galapagos Island animals is the marine iguana. These lizards have black skin and are the only lizards in the world that live near the water. When mating, their black skin turns red in an attempt to attract a mate, and travelers will find these small creatures nearly everywhere on the island.

The Cormorant

Also among the animals of the Galapagos is the cormorant. The particular species of cormorant found among the animals of the Galapagos is the only flightless cormorant in the world. After years of living on an island, this bird developed adept swimming skills and lost the ability to fly. The cormorant is on the Island of Isabela year round.

The Marine Turtle

This is the only sea turtle that makes the Galapagos Islands its home. The marine turtles are incredibly fast and skillful swimmers who lay their eggs between the months of December and June. Interested travelers can even volunteer to count and mark the nests and eggs of the turtles during these months for a more hands-on experience.

The many endemic animals of the Galapagos and their proximity to travelers make a trip to the islands an inimitable experience. Tours and trips area available for families year round.
