Situated in northeastern South America about 8,000 kilometers from Paris and eight-hours away by air, French Guiana extends over 91,000 square kilometers, nearly one-sixth the size of France, and with its 145,000 inhabitants, it happens to be the largest, yet least populated territory of France. Bordered by Brazil to the south and Suriname to the west, covered for the most part by the Amazonian forest, French Guiana has a sweet equatorial climate with two seasons, dry and rainy. Kourou, which is 60 kilometers northwest from Cayenne, is the home of the European Space Center.
