hopping in St. Thomas can be an all-consuming endeavor. Charlotte-Amalie boasts several blocks packed with air-conditioned stores selling jewelry, fine china, liquor, linens, imported china and crystal, designer clothing, Caribbean handicrafts, and antiques. Many of the stores, including the entire Royal Dane Mall, above, are housed in brick-walled warehouses originally used to store pirate bounty. Traders brought the brick to the island as ballast in their sailing ships, and then exchanged it for rum, sugar, and molasses.
Dronningen's Gade (Main Street) cuts through the main shopping area of Charlotte-Amalie. Camille Pissaro, a famous French Impressionist painter born in 1830, grew up in the house on 14 Dronningen's Gade.
Tillett Gardens, once an old Danish farm, now serves as a local center for creative artists and performers. Interspersed throughout the gardens are studios and galleries, and often, musical performances.
