When first approaching the temples of Tikal, you notice the slight rise in elevation as the path meanders through the sub-tropical jungle. Howling monkeys shriek in the trees,
adding a strange sense of intrigue as you near the Great Plaza. The heat is stifling and the thundering clouds above warn of the torrential downpours that constantly douse the region during the rainy season. Wildlife abounds in this area. Even in modern day, with the swarms of visitors flocking for a glimpse of these great remnants of the past, it is quite common to see many animals that make Tikal home. Toucans, Cockatoos and other birds with bright plumage sing in the branches, witness to the wonders that hide in the jungle canopy 100 feet above. Don't gaze skyward for too long, though! Many sights lure the eyes to ground level. The massive roots of Ceiba trees converge to trunks that may reach a diameter of 10 feet. Occidental turkeys scavenge the ground, oblivious to human intruders. The elusive jaguar prowls the area, too, but is rarely seen. The trail continues up the incline to the edge of the Great Plaza, giving little hint of the magnificence to come.
