Washington DC 4th of July

Washington DC 4th of July

A DC 4th of July will be marked by a patriotic spirit. Of all cities and towns in the country, spending America’s birthday in the national capital is sure to be a special event. The Washington DC fireworks are famous across the country, and the National Independence day parade is one of the best. If you’re looking to shake up your 4th of July routine this year, skip the usual barbeque or picnic in favor of visiting Washington DC. The DC Mall fireworks, the Washington Monument lit up with exploding fireworks, and thousands of people sprawled on the lawn of the Capitol building will be an incredible memory for years to come.

Get ready for an all-day event if you plan on attending a 2023 DC 4th of July celebration. The holiday begins with a parade along Constitution Avenue that begins at 11:45 am. If you want a good view for this National Independence Day parade, arrive at least a couple hours before it begins. Running between 7th and 17th streets, the parade features marching bands, military units, and floats. This celebration of America’s birthday is a massive display of red, white, and blue. The best way to arrive to the National Independence Day Parade is with public transportation; take the Metro to stations near the National Mall including Metro Center, Federal Triangle, or Judiciary Square.

After the parade, festivities continue throughout the day during a DC 4th of July. There are many vendors of food and drink, but remember to bring some of your own water to stay hydrated as the weather can be hot and humid. Other than the National Independence Day Parade, the other most anticipated event is the Washington DC fireworks. The fireworks begin around 9:15 pm and are launched from the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. Lighting up the sky over the Washington Monument, these fireworks are especially patriotic.

Between the two major events of the day, there are many activities to keep families and friends occupied. The Smithsonian Folklife Festival takes place from 11 am to 5 pm and features music, dance performances, cooking demonstrations, and storytelling for kids. The National Archives are open from 10 am to 9 pm for special family programs. The White House Visitor Center is also open on the 4th of July from 9 am to 3 pm. Families can stop in for games, crafts, and other activities. As the evening approaches, there are many concerts you can plan to attend. The US Army Concert Band performs starting at 6pm at the Washington Monument and the National Symphony Orchestra plays a special concert at the Capitol Building at 8 pm.

Despite an impressive series of events throughout the day, for many visitors, the favorite part of the day is the Washington DC fireworks. Arrive early to get a good place, and spread out your blanket and chairs to enjoy the show. Many people bring picnics while others enjoy the variety of street vendors. If you’re looking for an excuse to visit our nation’s capital, there’s no better reason to visit than the holiday that commemorates the Declaration of Independence. Whether you’re traveling as a family or are looking for a party, you’ll find a match in Washington DC’s 2023 Independence Day festivities.
