Nocturnal was a transient festival, moving locations for lack of a steady venue—incidentally, early on it was held at the Coachella Valley Indio Polo Grounds, the home of the Coachella Music Festival. In 1998, it kicked off at San Bernardino's The National Orange Show where it returned from 2003 through 2010 for lack of another venue with adequate space for all the special festival rooms and events.

Generally, the Nocturnal Festival has hosted more than 30 music artists performing between five stages. The festival is defined by several key aspects, including art installations, theatrics (fire-throwers, trapeze artists, go-go-dancers), phenomenal sensory-focused decor, and Vendor Village where tons of unique items are for sale. Each of the five stages is characterized by a certain style of music and a specific theme and features a main room. The Queen's Grounds: fire throwing and dancing, carnival rides, and merchandise booths are the main attraction along with a more than 350-foot wall mural by a famous LA-based artist.

The Labyrinth: This is the most over-the-top room at the Nocturnal Music Festival and a sight to see with a kaleidoscope of colors emitted from huge, splashy designs, a wonderland of large, hanging shapes, smoke machines, light shows, and lasers. One of the best features has been the implementation of trapeze artists flying above the crowds.
