Each new year ushers in one in a series of 12 animals. The 12 animals repeat in a cycle over a period of 12 years. The animals are: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. As with the Western zodiac of astrological signs assigned by month, the animals all represent certain characteristics that people take on if they are born in that year.
