Chinese New Year in New York City

The Chinese New Year in New York City is celebrated widely across town. As you might expect, however, the city's Chinatown area is where the main festivities take place. Columbus Park serves as the site for the opening day's Firecracker Ceremony & Cultural Festival. The firecracker detonations are intended to ward off any evil spirits that might be present. The ceremony begins at around 11 a.m., and following it are hours of cultural performances and presentations.

Also following the opening firecracker ceremony is the main NYC Chinese New Year Parade. This procession of dancers and costumed performers winds its way along the main streets in Chinatown, the likes of which include Mott Street, East Broadway, and Pell Street. Other parades can also be enjoyed while visiting the Big Apple during the Chinese New Year. In Queens, for example, the Chinese-American community puts on a colorful parade that has a less touristy air about it.

The main parade for the Chinese New Year in New York City kicks off at around 11:30 p.m. on the first day. Since the dates of the Chinese vary from year to year, this festive event can be held anywhere from late January to mid-February. Various other events are also held at different venues across the city. The China Institute at 125 East 65th Street, for example, hosts some popular NYC Chinese New Year events that can see you making a dumpling mask and watching vibrant dance performances, among other things.

There are many excellent restaurants in New York City, so getting something good to eat while in town won't be hard. Should you be coming to town during the 2017 Chinese New Year celebrations, then a visit to at least one of the city's Chinese restaurants is essentially a must. For a change of pace, you might also see what the food carts are peddling in Chinatown. Trying some street food, if you will, is recommended. If nothing else, you might grab some sweets while doing some Chinatown shopping.
