Mt St Helens- Stand on the crater rim and see inside the volcano
Mt St Helens
Mt St Helens, located in the Cascade Ranges, is
an active volcano in Washington State. Most famous
for its May, 1980 explosion that killed 54, this
volcano is one of the few American volcanos, short
of the Hawaii Islands, that have affected human
settlements in recent memory.
After lying dormant for many years, Mount St Helens
awoke again on October 4, 2004, spewing ash into
the air. While the mountain has not had a second
devastating pyroclastic eruption, such as what occurred
in 1980, the volcano has had minor 'eruptions' that
resulted in the minor rebuilding of the cone within
the rim of the volcano. The 2004 activity, unlike
the activity following the 1980 eruption, shows
signs that another eruption could occur within the
near future.
