Barcelona Beaches

Barcelona beaches are one of the city’s biggest draws. In addition to the museums, churches, and great restaurants for which the capital of Catalonia is famous, there are also lovely beaches stretching down a few miles of coastline, perfect for sunbathing, swimming, or going for a jog. To many locals and travelers, the best beach in Barcelona Spain is Bogatell. Every day, cyclists, rollerbladers, and joggers get their exercise along the beautiful Bogatell Beach and enjoy the lovely views of the sea. Other popular beaches in Barcelona include Barceloneta, Mar Bella, and Nova Icaria. If you’re looking to combine a city break with a little sunshine, pack your swimsuit and sunscreen and head for Barcelona.

The Barcelona beaches are close to the city and can easily be reached with the metro route towards Barceloneta. Hop aboard the yellow line or walk about 20 minutes from the city center and you will reach the closest beach to the city, Barceloneta. This wide, long beach is full of restaurants and bars. Some travelers who don’t want to go for a swim or get some sun still go to Barceloneta for the views and atmosphere. If you do plan on enjoying the beach, sun beds are available for rental, and lifeguards give the beach a sense of safety. Escape the city for a day of water sports, building sand castles, and basking in the sun.

If you love water sports, then the best beach in Barcelona Spain is Mar Bella. Windsurfing and kayaking are especially popular at Mar Bella Barcelona. Near the Olympic Marina is the Nova Icaria beach; stop here for lunch and enjoy the fantastic beachside restaurants and bars. Another beach is about twice the size of Nova Icaria beach, Bogatell. Bring your rollerblades, running shoes, or rent a bicycle and you’ll fit right in at Bogatell beach. This area is known for being more tranquil compared to the other beaches, and you won’t find a wide selection of bars and restaurants. If you’re looking for a natural place to enjoy the scenery, then Bogatell is for you.

In the other direction along the coastline, the last section of Barceloneta is called Sant Sebastia beach. From the middle of March to the middle of November many people are out enjoying Barcelona beaches, but the high season is from the end of May through the end of September. Many young people think the best beach in Barcelona Spain is Mar Bella because it has a nudist area. Screened by bamboo, this beach has a more isolated, private feeling than the other beach destinations in the city. If you’re more into exercise than topless sunbathing, head for the promenade along Bogatell, it’s a great place for people-watching.

Most foreign visitors to Barcelona beaches don’t stray beyond Barceloneta. If you want to be among locals rather than tourists, walk beyond Barceloneta to some of the other beaches such as Bogatell, Sant Sebastia, or Mar Bella. At these locations you are more likely to be surrounded by local families and young people. All of the beaches have good facilities and showers, so don’t be nervous about leaving Barceloneta behind for smaller beaches. If you planned a day at the beach but woke up to rain, there are many indoor activities in Barcelona as well. Spend the day shopping, visiting the National Museum of Art, or catch a concert at the Barcelona Concert Hall, and save your beach excursion for a day with sunny skies.
